Jordan Harris – Welsh Selection

The Welsh Bushi-Kai are pleased to announce that Jordan Harris has been selected to represent Wales at the WKF World Cadet /Junior / U21 Championships which is being held in Malaysia in October this year.  Jordan, who trains at our Cwmafan Club with Nigel Taylor has been in great form on the tournament circuit this year and his selection for the World Championships is just rewards for his efforts.
We would also like to congratulate Sammi Scott (WKK), Luke Davies (VOGKO) and Cheyne Phillips (WSKU) who were also selected for the Championships.

Sensei Tatsuo Suzuki

It is with great sadness and regret that we report the loss of  Wado Ryu Karate Master, Sensei Tatsuo Suzuki, who passed away in the early hours of Tuesday July 12th. Sensei Suzuki was one of the prime movers in the introduction of  Wado Ryu Karate into Great Britain and Europe in the early 1960’s and oversaw its spread and worldwide development.

The Welsh Bushi-Kai would like to extend our sympathies and condolences to his immediate family and friends and to his extended family in the world of Karate.

Course, Grading & Club News

Competition Karate Course – July 23rd
With Anthony Bridge 3rd Dan, National and International Championship Winner

This is the 2nd in a series of courses run specifically for students interested in Competition Kumite (Fighting)and will cover all aspects of sport karate techniques including individual and combination techniques, timing, distancing and much more. Students of all ages and abilities from within the Association are invited to attend, from complete novice to the more experienced fighter.
With the Welsh Junior Championships taking place the following day, this is an ideal opportunity for squad members to complete their preparation training.

Course starts at 10 am and will run for 2hrs….Course fee: £5
Students should bring along their Pads, Mitts, Gumshields etc..As well as an up-to-date WBK License Book.

Kyu Grading July 10th – Report
On Sunday July the 10th,the Association Gradings (Red to Purple Belt) were held at the Cwrt Herbert Sport Centre in Neath. The WBK Grading Examiners would like to congratulate all those who attended the course and grading on displaying such a high standard of karate throughout the day. We are pleased to report that a 100% pass rate was achieved. Many thanks to the Dan Grades who assisted the grade examiners during the course.

Passes by grade were as follows:
Red – 24
Yellow – 7
Orange – 20
Green – 10
Blue – 3
Purple – 4
Course only 28.

The Next Association Kyu Grading takes place on Sunday 6th November at Cwrt Herbert Sports Centre, 12.30 – 3.00pm

Cwrt Herbert Karate Club Venue Change
Due to increased Club Membership, the Cwrt Herbert Karate Club will be moving to a new (and bigger) Venue from Monday July 18th.
Training sessions will now take place at Ysgol Hendre Sports Hall, just a short distance away from the old venue.

BKF Championships News

This weekend has seen the Bushi-Kai Squad in action at one of the biggest events on the domestic karate calendar – The BKF 4 Nations Karate Championships. The venue for this tournament was once again the Ponds Forge Arena in Sheffield.
Our squad made the long journey to Yorkshire early on saturday morning with our Juniors competing later that afternoon, whilst our Seniors had to wait until today (Sunday).

Everyone who represented the Bushi-Kai gave   110% on the mats and can be proud of their efforts. We are pleased to announce that  our fighters return home with 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze Medals.

BKF 4 Nations Championships – June 25th/26th.

The Welsh Bushi-Kai are sending a squad to Sheffield next weekend to compete in the BKF British Championships.
We can now confirm that all of our fighter entries have been registered with the tournament organiser.

As this event will be staged over 2 days, we have arranged an overnight stay (sat 25th) for our squad at the following hotel:

North Wales Open

Our Kumite Coaches, Nigel Taylor &  Mark McMahon, took a small selection of our squad to Wrexham today to compete in the Annual North Wales Open Championships, which was very well attended.
Once again our fighters fought with great skill and determination , which resulted in the winning of  5 Gold, 4 Silver & 2 Bronze Medals.
Congratulations to everyone who represented the Bushi-Kai at this well established tournament.

As part of our Squad Development Program, The Welsh Bushi-Kai will holding several Competition Karate Courses during the next few months.
The first Course will be held on  June 18th and taken by Jordan Harris – 2nd Dan, winner of multiple National & International Titles. These courses will cover all aspects of competition karate such as timing, distancing and scoring.

WKU Inv. Championships

Western Karate Union Invitational Championships:

Yesterday, the WBK Squad were in action in Weston-Super-Mare at the Championships hosted by Sensei Alan Flook 7th Dan and his WKU Karate Association.  This event is rapidly growing into a major event on the domestic karate calendar and this year attracted nearly 700 competitors, with many of the country’s top squads in attendance.

The Welsh Bushi-Kai came home from the event with a very creditable 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 13 Bronze Medals. Both WBK Senior and Junior squads were present and should be congratulated on their performances. – Well done !!

Scotland Report

The Welsh Bushi-Kai have once again shown they can compete with the very best, winning 3 Silver and 5 Bronze medals at the Scottish International Open Karate Championships.
This event traditionally attracts top quality Karate-Ka from throughout the United Kingdom as well as from overseas. This years championships was to be no exception, with competitors from all of the Home Nations, Egypt, Norway, Denmark, Holland and many more.
An 8 medal return for our 7 competitors is a great result and our squad can be justifiably proud of their efforts.

Mark McMahon, Holly Carey and Megan Taylor won Silver, with Anthony Bridge, Jordan Harris (x2), Jess Forse  and Amy Nicholas  getting Bronze.

Our congratulations also go Robbie Scott and Sammi Scott of the Welsh Karate-Kai who won Gold and Bronze respectively and to Cheyne Phillips of the WSKU on winning Bronze.
